Bahrooz Jaafar

Bahrooz Jaafar hails from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from Cyprus International University (2017–2023) in Nicosia. He is the founder and head of the Mediterranean Institute for Regional Studies, with over 17 years of expertise in energy geopolitics, energy transition, the regional order in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean, and ongoing conflicts in Iraq.

Dr. Bahrooz has published numerous academic books, research papers, policy analyses, and articles in international scientific journals and think tanks. Much of his work is available on www.mirs.co, accessible in English, Arabic, and Kurdish. His recent academic publications have attracted significant attention.

His notable scientific book, Deciphering the Eastern Mediterranean's Hydrocarbon Dynamics: Unravelling Regional Shifts, was published in 2024 by Emerald Publishing Limited (ISBN: 183608143X). It is peer-reviewed, indexed in Scopus, and available in 140 countries worldwide.

He also authored the academic book chapter "Charting the Course: Geopolitical Dynamics and Market Realities in the Iraqi Kurdistan Energy Sector," published by Springer Nature, a globally renowned publishing company specializing in science, humanities, technical, and medical fields. Additionally, he published a book in both Kurdish and English in 2016 titled Turkey–Israel Relations: During the Justice and Development Party Period (2002-2015). His research article The Role of Powerbroking in the Mediterranean Hydrocarbon Issue and Its Impact on Environmental Crisis; A Kin-State Case Dimension on Cyprus was published in the prestigious journal Sustainability, with an impact factor of 3.889.

Dr. Bahrooz’s insights are highly regarded by media outlets, research centers, and decision-makers, particularly on topics such as capacity building, energy security, non-state actors, energy geopolitics, and the political economy of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. An esteemed Iraqi Kurdish academic, he completed a six-month teaching methods course at Charmo University, earning an internationally recognized pedagogical certificate. In 2016, he established the Mediterranean Institute for Regional Studies, officially registered with the Iraqi and Kurdistan Regional Governments.
